Recently I told a children's story in church about when I was a young child, probably 8 or 9. I was living in Mexico at the time, and for memorizing the Ten Commandments I received a Bible with my name embossed on the front cover. My very own Bible, with my name on it, I was thrilled. At the end of the children's story I challenged the kids that if they memorized the Ten Commandments I would give them a Bible with their name embossed on the front as well.
Well, two kids took me up on it. They memorized the Ten Commandments through a song. One Sabbath they sang the song for me in my study and I promised that I would get them their very own Bible.
So, I bought them each The Remnant Study Bible - Young Scholars Edition - NKJV. I had their names embossed on the blue and lavender Bibles in silver letters, and presented it to them on a recent Sabbath. I wanted a Bible that they could grow into. A Bible that they would cherish for a very long time. I invested more than $5.00 for each Bible (I'm not going to tell you the real price). I was giving them more than just a book, I was giving them The Word of God. An investment that will lead them into eternity.
Memorization of Scripture seems to have lost it's place in the age of computers and smart phones. Maybe it's a practice that we should reconsider?
